CONTINUING EDUCATION
Each month, Therapy
Rehabilitation Services hosts an in-service education program for our employees and other interested licensed therapists who wish to attend. Meetings focus on a wide range of topics and feature prominent speakers. These programs are our way of helping our therapists and others in the community expand their base of knowledge, keep current on new research, understand changes in laws and network with other professionals.
Seating for
each meeting is limited. RSVP is required
for attendance. Please call at least 48 hours
ahead to assure seating and food service.

pm The Therapist's Role in Oncology Rehabilitation - Part 1
Specialized clinical knowledge is vital for all
therapists to be able to provide optimum care in all settings-
acute care, outpatient rehab and schools. This course will
cover common related medical terminology, staging and grading,
specialized treatment approaches, and the clinical side effects of
surgery, chemo and radiation. The speakers will be:
Lindsay Thomas, RN, MSN, OCN,
Oncology Certified Nurse, Oncololgy Service Line at Scottsdale
Healthcare's Virginia Piper Cancer Center. Lindsay is a member
of the Assn. of Cancer Executives, Assn. of Community Cancer Centers
and the Oncology Nursing Society. She will be giving a general
overview of oncology rehabilitation including medical terminology,
classification of cancer tumors, specialized treatment approaches,
cancer detection and the latest research in treating certain
cancers.
Andrea Brennan, O.T., from Virginia
Piper Cancer Center. She is a Certified Lymphadema Therapist
and member of the Lymphology Assn of N. America, International
Society of Lymphology and the National Lymphodema Network. She
holds a Certificate of Clinical Competency in sharp wound
debridement and is a member of the Americal Professional Wound Care
Assn. She is the author of a chapter on lymphedema in the
medical textbook Core Curriculum for Phlebology Nurses.
She will be speaking on the lymphatic system and lymphadema
treatment for cancer survivors.
Yvonne Harrison, P.T. is a Geriatric
Certified Specialist (GCS) with 30 years experience in hospital
acute rehab, outpatient rehab, skilled nursing and home
health. She is currently working at Mayo Clinic Hospital with
patients with a variety of cancer diagnoses and pursuing her DPT
from NAU. She will be speaking on the role of the PT in
cancer survivorship.
Lisa Naylor, CCC-SLP has a Master's
degree in Speech - Language Pathology and Audiology from University
of Iowa. She is an SLP in the outpatient rehab department
at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital specializing in the evaluation
and treatment of Voice Disorders, Swallowing Disorders
and Cognitive Communication Disorders. She works with head,
neck and brain cancer survivors related to the rehabilitation
of swallowing function and cognitive language abilities. She
will be speaking on the role of speech therapy across the modalities
(dysphagia rehab, cognitive/language rehab, TEP services) for these
and other cancer diagnoses.

Therapist's Role in the Psychosocial Aspects of the Oncology
Patient
Presenter: Suzanne Hyde, LCSW
Suzanne Hyde has a Master's Degree in Social
Work and has been working in the medical social work field for nine
years. She is currently with Scottsdale Healthcare's Virginia
G. Piper Cancer Center. She also has experience in hospice
settings. Her primary role at Virginia Piper Center is to
support individuals diagnosed with cancer and their families .
Her department provides resources and referrals, counseling, and
facilitates the many support groups offered at the center. She
will be discussing the Psychosocial aspects of cancer patients and
various strategies for support for patients across all age groups
and their families.

pm Improving Phonological Awareness for Reading
and Spelling: The Speech/Language Pathologist's Role
from Evaluation through Remediation
Presenter: Betsy Hayward, M.S CCC-SLP, M.S. Ed
This course will provide information and research
regarding phonological awareness instruction. The course
objective is to provide a rationale for the participation of
the SLP in the evaluation and intervention processes.
Information and strategies for the evaluation and treatment of
phonological/phonemic awareness difficulties will be covered.
Our presenter, Betsy Hayward, has been working
in school settings since 1993. She earned a Master's Degree in
Special Education from Simmons College in Boston and a Master's
Degree in Speech/Language Pathology with a reading specialism
certification from Massachusetts General Hospital's Institute for
Health Professions. She began her special ed career working
with children with Dyslexia at a private school for children with
language based learning disabilities. Teaching children to
read using research based, systematic instruction has always been
her passion. Betsy works to include phonemic awareness reading
instruction in her articulation and oral language therapy for
speech/language impaired children at risk for reading
difficulties.
