This presentation will outline levels of social competence, language use, and language comprehension for students with significant communication disorders with the goal of guiding selection of therapeutic targets. Emphasis is placed on naturalistic and meaningful approaches to intervention, reinforcing support techniques. Ideas for therapy activities and related resources are included. Participants will be able to use included handouts to identify levels of social competence, expressive language, and receptive language. They will learn to pick functional language targets for intervention and select activities to address these targets.

Kim Maryhew has provided therapies in public school, residential treatment center, and home-based settings. Her desire to learn about the autism population led her to acquire of over 350 hours of professional development training related to autism and other neuro-cognitive language disorders. Kim has collaborated with professionals in a variety of disciplines to develop and present school district trainings related to the characteristics, assessment, support, and intervention for children with autism. She has also served on committees and in related roles at the district level that addressed special education issues and provided support for other professionals who work with profoundly language delayed students.
