Older adults make up 13% of the population but consume 30% of the medications. Their state of health varies extensively and consequently pharmacokinetics are influenced by multiple factors including absorption, distribution, drug clearance, tolerance and sensitivity, adverse reactions, etc. Age related changes and presence of multiple pathologies have effects on drug therapy and systemic drug response. Physical and Occupational therapists need to be aware of potential harmful interactions between medications and therapy interventions, promote synergistic effects from drugs on motor and cognitive performance and recognize change in status that may be related to drug therapies. This presentation will provide an overview of these pharmacological considerations in geriatric care management to optimize patient safety and functional outcomes.
