Speech-language therapy, as a related service, is provided when “…required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education…” (IDEA 34 CFR 300.34(a)). Often students with cognitive deficits continue to receive services simply because they are enrolled in special education. This session will provide considerations for determining when a child no longer needs direct services.
This is a one-hour lecture, followed by a second one-hour lecture on Assistive Technology.
Presenter: Joanne Phillips, MA, CCC-SLP
Ms. Phillips is the President of Arizona Education Cadre, a retired Arizona State Director of Special Education and has also worked as a local special education director (Scottsdale USD, Deer Valley USD), clinical coordinator, school and hospital speech pathologist and adjunct faculty for Scottsdale Community College. She is a guest lecturer for the Sandra Day O’Conner College of Law and Midwestern University Health Services programs.
